You might have seen the food pyramid on the wall at your doctor’s surgery or you might remember studying it at school or seeing it in your child’s homework. You might not have seen the new food pyramid yet however.

With the old food pyramid, there are four food groups illustrated and stacked on top of one another. The biggest food group is on the bottom and this is cereal, rice, pasta, and bread. This is what you should eat most of. Next up are fruit and vegetables. On top of that, you have meat, dairy, fish, eggs, beans, and nuts. At the very top, the item you should eat the least of, is fats. The food pyramid shows how much of each food type you should eat each day.

With the new food pyramid, there are downwards rainbow colored stripes symbolizing each food group. The new food pyramid also makes it clear how many cups or ounces of each food you should eat per day because not everybody is sure how big a “serving” should be exactly.

Does the Food Pyramid Work for Everyone?

The new food pyramid encourages a balanced diet, which is something that all healthcare professionals agree upon. Your body needs a combination of grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat or poultry to function properly. It is possible to eat healthily on a vegetarian diet or vegan diet but you will need to make substitutions, such as eating beans or tofu instead of meat or poultry.

All Foods are Allowed

Nothing is banned but there are some things you should eat less of. You can eat a whole watermelon if you want but you should probably not eat a whole stick of butter because your body cannot use that much fat at once. If you love fried chicken, you can eat it in moderation. Chicken is a healthy, lean protein source and the body needs fats too, so the oil is acceptable.

You might want to serve your deep fried chicken with some salad or vegetables to balance it out or you might want to eat plenty of fruit and grains for lunch and enjoy the fried chicken in the evening. There is no reason why you cannot be healthy and also be able to enjoy your favorite foods.

Banning all fried food or all sugary food only makes you miserable. Eating it in moderation is an enjoyable and perfectly healthy compromise unless your doctor has put you on a strict diet for medical reasons.

Eating a balanced diet does not mean a deep fried chicken in one hand and a huge plate of French fries in the other but it does mean eating some of every food and making sure you eat foods from each food group to nourish your body properly.

So if you were worried about what the new food pyramid means and you want to know if it is still fine to enjoy your favorite southern fried chicken recipe, the answer is a resounding yes!
