Having a slow cooker in your kitchen not only ensures that you will always have a hot meal ready to eat whenever it is convenient for your schedule, but that each meal can be delicious and nutritious. If you are trying to get away from fast food or are tired of eating whatever can be grabbed on the way out the door, it’s time to try something new.

A crockpot is essential in the kitchen of any busy adult, especially if you have an active family to keep up with. When time is limited most people end up in the fast food drive thru somewhere ordering food that is very convenient but extremely unhealthy.

The best way to break that cycle is to use a good crockpot to ensure that you have a healthy meal ready at the snap of a finger. Since these cookers allow your food to cook slowly while you go on with your day or while you sleep, it saves you considerable amounts of time. Consider just a couple ways to create your own healthy slow cooker meals with whatever ingredients you happen to have in the kitchen right now.

If you have chicken broth on hand and some frozen or fresh vegetables you could create your own soups. You can even add raw chicken to water and let it cook to create your own broth. Add in whatever other ingredients you happen to have on hand and you have a great starter for your soup.

Get creative because a great assortment of soups can be created depending on the ingredients you have in your kitchen at any given moment. For items like pasta and potatoes that don’t need a lot of time to cook, add them into your soup base a few hours or so before you want to eat.

Dry beans are one of those ultra healthy foods that most people bypass because they take so much time to cook properly. The slow gradual cook time of a crockpot is just perfect for this type of thing. Just toss them in with some water for a healthier option to canned beans.

If you want a real meal, let the beans cook overnight then in the morning add in browned lean ground turkey and/or uncooked whole grain brown rice. You can add in any kind of seasoning or just blend in some melted cheese for something children will really love.

The varieties of recipes that can be created with a slow cooker are literally endless. Get creative!
